ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evidence for multistore theories of memory and some difficulties with the approach. It outlines an alternative framework for human memory research in terms of depth or levels of processing. The chapter considers some current data and arguments in the light of this alternative framework and implications for further research. Structural model of memorymultistore model of information processing. In contrast to the multistore model, levels of processing are relatively non-structured; what we remember is what happens as a result of our processing of the information. Deep processing involves the semantic processing of the information, which is what occurs when teachers encode the meaning of a word and relate it to similar words with similar meaning. To automatically recognising patterns and trends and extraction of meaning. After something is recognised, it then undergoes further mental processing through enrichment and/or elaboration.
