ABSTRACT

Competency in communication was the skill that was ranked highest on their list of desired skills. Communication competency is not only one of the most desired traits that interviewers look for in candidates, but also one of the top two or three reasons cited for advancement within a wide variety of businesses and industries. Requesting information from group members serves to broaden the information base of the group, initiate interaction, and encourage low-verbal member participation. Requesting information is a basic communication skill that invites others to communicate, participate, and contribute. The six task-guiding behaviors are requesting information, providing information, clarifying information, guiding discussion, analyzing, and negotiating. Giving evidence, information, or personal opinion is a vital behavior each member of the group is expected to perform.
