ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of questions in communication. Research has found that: “Conversations are a fundamental human experience that is necessary to pursue intrapersonal and interpersonal goals across a myriad of contexts, relationships, and modes of communication”. Some of the most hopeless and depressed people in the world are those who cannot or will not attempt to build bridges to others through conversation. Although the topics of conversations are limited only by the imaginations of the two people speaking, there are only three primary types of conversations–acknowledging, entertaining, and sharing. The chapter explores the basic structure of face-to-face conversations in which two people acknowledge, entertain, or share information with one another. An entertaining conversation is any verbal interaction between two people that is pleasurable, enjoyable, or humorous. A sharing conversation is a verbal interaction between two people in which they exchange facts, opinions, and feelings with each other.
