ABSTRACT

Focus is given here to the leadership theory known as ‘transformational leadership’ which, when used alongside learner-centred leadership, can have large-scale influence on student learning. Effective leadership is identified as the conduit by which change is produced. Evidence is drawn from leadership contexts which involve schools that might be described as operating in challenging circumstances. The chapter draws on examples from practice both in the UK and from further afield including one inspirational project underway in Ghana. This chapter asks the reader to consider how leaders can effect change and to identify specific issues that require attention particularly when designing teacher professional development opportunities aimed at addressing the needs of failing schools.
