ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by identifying the world shortage of teachers particularly in the light of global ambitions for universal schooling. The exodus of teachers and leaders from schools in the UK is identified and illustrated through examples from one research project where the headteacher role has been difficult to fill on multiple occasions. Further research, which invited leaders and teachers to identify what might make them stay in the profession, is used to offer insight into how leaders might retain good staff. Interviews with headteachers responsible for schools which are operating in challenging circumstances are offered as evidence as to how teacher shortage might be mitigated. The important role of collaborative leadership approaches is identified in supporting and enhancing the work of teachers in order to maintain staffing complements and employment stability particularly where teachers might be facing immense pressures in their daily working lives.
