ABSTRACT

Located within the part of the book which focuses on leadership with purpose, this chapter explores models of systems leadership which have international appeal and prevalence. Much attention is given to the English model of systems leadership to illustrate how this operates in English schools. Case studies are presented to show how systems leadership is being enacted to support the school improvement agenda in England. Attention is given to systems leadership in action in Finland where societal respect for the profession allows for greater professional freedom. The role of data in measuring school performance is critiqued and readers encouraged to think about school success other than in numerical terms. Reference is made to both systems leadership and distributed leadership as the models dominating in a number of school systems.
