ABSTRACT

Forms of theatre outside Western tradition are examined, specifically SANSKRIT, XIQU, NOH, KABUKI, KUNQU, KATHAKALI, BEIJING OPERA, TAKARAZUKA and AFRICAN ORATURE. These are examined at some length, then summarized and placed into an Eastern vs. Western table. Western theatre forms with global origins outside the U.S. are examined as ISMs. Presented in the approximate order in which they first appeared are: ROMANTICISM, REALISM, NATURALISM, IMPRESSIONISM, SYMBOLISM, EXPRESSIONISM, FUTURISM, DADAISM, CONSTRUCTIVISIM, SURREALISM, DIDACTICISM, ABSURDISIM, FEMINISM and POSTMODERNISM. The way in which these can be further categorized and identified or ISMOLOGY is identified.
