ABSTRACT

Six definitions of style are offered, demonstrating the range of topics that will be covered. Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn are presented as consummate masters of style and timeless elegance. Readers are encouraged to think of mastering a period style role and entering the world of the play, much like visiting a foreign country and through rehearsal, becoming increasingly comfortable and knowledgeable until one finally feels not like a tourist, but a genuine native. An example is provided through a Travel Guide of Shakespearia, a kingdom of the imagination. The way in which judgments are made based on the sight and sound we experience during a first impression is explored, as are the way style is reflected in various rituals and in one’s life style choices. Conditions of make believe for performances become the conventions of a theatrical experience. The less familiar and more strange a style, the more conventions are required.
