ABSTRACT

German nouns must have a gender, either masculine, feminine or neuter, which shows up on the articles and pronouns (and adjectives) used with the nouns in the singular. This chapter gives the different gender forms of the definite and indefinite articles in the nominative case. It is often not possible to predict which noun will take a certain gender, particularly in the case of nouns referring to inanimate objects, and therefore when students learn individual nouns, they must also remember their gender. There are, however, a few correlations between certain characteristics of the noun and its gender that can be given to help students remember and predict which nouns tend to take a certain gender.
