ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of imperative in the German grammar. The imperative mood is used to express a command. In German, there are three different forms of the imperative depending on whom the speaker is addressing. First, the informal singular form for a person who would be addressed as du. Secondly, the informal plural form for people addressed as ihr. Third, the polite form for people (singular and plural) who would be addressed as Sie. The form of the imperative used in the text is the informal singular (du) form, which is made up from the present tense stem of the verb (the infinitive minus -en) plus the ending -e. In written German, it is common to see an infinitive being used as an imperative. It can also be used in the spoken language, but this is less usual, as the infinitival imperative is a less direct, more general way of giving instructions.
