ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of separable verbs in the German grammar. German has a special class of verbs known as separable, as their prefixes are separated from the verb in certain grammatical constructions. Separable verbs are recognised by the fact that their prefixes are usually identical to prepositions. Less commonly, a prefix can be separable or inseparable depending on the verb to which it attaches. The chapter presents a table that shows list of the most frequently used separable prefixes and some of the meanings usually associated with them. The chapter is designed for both classroom use and independent study, providing step-by-step approach to separable verbs and multiple exercises for the students to rehearse and practise themselves.
