ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of prepositions in the German grammar. Prepositions in German always require the following noun or pronoun to be in the accusative, genitive or dative, which is evident when an article, pronoun or adjective is used. Some prepositions may take the accusative or dative depending on the construction that they are in. Case is not simply assigned to the element which immediately follows the preposition but to the whole noun phrase, i.e. to the noun and any articles, pronouns and adjectives preceding it. Even if another element, e.g. a numeral or a proper name, appears between preposition and noun phrase, case is still assigned. As is the case in English, prepositions in German often have different meanings depending on the context in which they are used.
