ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of adjectives in the German grammar. In German, adjectives used before nouns require a special ending. The type of ending needed depends on the gender, case and number of the following noun PLUS which type of element precedes the adjective (e.g. an article with or without an ending). Unlike English, which usually marks its adverbs with the suffix -ly (e.g. ‘He is slow / He moves slowly’), German does not have a special ending for adverbs, which means that they look identical to adjectives. However, the difference between the two becomes apparent when they appear in the noun phrase, as adjectives require an ending and adverbs remain unchanged. The chapter is designed for both classroom use and independent study, providing step-by-step approach to various adjectives and multiple exercises for the students to rehearse and practise themselves.
