Modal verbs are a category of verbs that usually indicate the attitude of a speaker in regard to an action. They are typically followed up with the infinitive of another verb to make sense and can therefore be classified as auxiliary verbs. When paired with an infinitive, these modal verb constructions do not use the infinitive particle zu.
