ABSTRACT

Mathematics was an area in which the nature of the discipline had an important influence not only on scholarly writing for publications but also on writing for pedagogical purposes. The most valued genre of scholarly writing was the journal article, and this had been little influenced by wider changes in higher education. In summary, genre continues to be an important tool for understanding and enacting disciplinarity and academic identity, albeit a site of some contention. Genre has been described as socially recognised ways of using language, and as a frame for social action. Genres limit the meaning potential of a text and, in academia, realise disciplines by enacting accepted epistemological practices and rhetorical conventions. Genres such as white papers, articles for newspapers and online media, and articles in professional journals, all of which Diane had written as part of her academic role, were valued, but not prioritised and, instead, only engaged in if time allowed.
