ABSTRACT

A poor body image has serious implications for a child’s social, emotional and physical well-being, so it is vital that the authors seek to address this concern in the primary school. Body image is an important part of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and this curriculum has the quality kitemark from the PSHE Association. This body image curriculum uses a self-esteem approach to promote body confidence in primary school pupils. There is much concern about children’s mental health, and body confidence is a vital component of good mental health. The body image curriculum is aimed at two main age ranges, although schools might choose to adapt the recommended ages to suit their particular needs. There is very little mention of diets or healthy eating in this body image curriculum. This curriculum focuses on celebrating everyone’s unique qualities.
