ABSTRACT
Japan is a leader in the development of pollution control technology and one of the world’s major polluters. It has some of the world’s strictest environmental quality standards and some of its most environmentally damaged areas. The Japanese are known as a nature-loving people but at the same time they are responsible for widespread environmental destruction. The administration is keen to become a leader in solving global environment problems yet causes international tension over such environmental issues as whaling and large developments overseas.
