ABSTRACT

Construction is already under way on the first phase of the Kansai International Airport (KIA). The airport, which is scheduled for completion in 1993, will be located on a 511ha reclaimed island connected to the mainland by a 3.8km road/rail bridge. At a cost of ¥1.19 trillion ($8.5 billion), the KIA is expected to revive the economic vitality and boost the international status of the Kansai region 1 by providing Japan’s only 24-hour airport. Figure 11.1 shows the KIA and associated developments, and Table 11.1 is a chronology of the KIA’s development.
