The fiscal face of Calcutta in the phase of its early growth

This chapter discusses the economic collaboration between the English and the natives that led to the advancement of the mercantile community in Bengal and growth of Calcutta as a haven for lucrative businesses. The chapter also discusses the collapse of this collaboration after the fall of the Union Bank, after which most of the Bengali capitalists withdrew from business and invested their wealth in landed property.
