ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at Calcutta through the perspective of the Bengal Renaissance and the Swadeshi Movement. The political and agitational movements within Calcutta, especially after the Partition of Bengal created a desire for a Bengali identity within the matrix of a broad Indianness. The Swadeshi and the Young Bengal movements brought public opinion to the fore and Calcutta as a city became the grounds of community formation, an assertion of identity.
