ABSTRACT
The chapter takes a look at the different epithets that the city of Calcutta acquired through the years – the City of Palaces, the City of Dreadful Night and others – through a morphological perspective. It explores British colonial literature, Indian art and aesthetics and architecture among other things to justify the various epithets that Calcutta earned.
