ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the growth of the city in terms of industry and economics. The fall of traditional industry and the rise of English capital played an important part in the fall and rise of cities and towns in colonial India in the nineteenth century. This chapter looks at Calcutta and its move towards industrialization in this context.
