ABSTRACT

This chapter is a study of the classification and internal structure of words in Nantong Chinese. It starts with a discussion of how words can be classified into different categories known as parts of speech. It then moves on to a discussion of different types of words, including their internal structures, i.e., how words are made from morphemes through morphological processes, such as compounding, affixation or reduplication, and their grammatical properties, such as noun classes or verb aspects. It concludes with a brief discussion of function words and their roles in forming various syntactic constructs.
