ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 analyses Nigeria’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) growth market. Financial and strategic advisory on M&A forms a key part of the investment banking business globally. This chapter discusses corporate M&A, the underlying motivations for mergers, types of mergers and global trends in M&A. The chapter discusses the structure, trends, regulations and stages of M&A in Nigeria, the valuation and financing mechanism used by investment banks. Opportunities for M&A in Nigeria have been driven by privatization of state-owned enterprises, banking consolidation and corporate restructuring. This chapter reviews the motivations for M&A for buyers and sellers and examines issues relating to deal structuring and financing.
