ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 explores principles and practice, as well as the growth, size and structure of the asset management business in Nigeria. Investment management is typically organized as an asset management subsidiary in Nigeria. Traditional asset management business in Nigeria falls primarily under three different categories: institutional asset management, private wealth management and collective investment schemes (mutual funds and exchange traded funds). The chapter discusses the development and market trends in mutual funds and exchange traded funds, which focus on retail investors. There are varieties of funds in Nigeria covering equity funds, bond funds, index funds, money market funds, umbrella funds, principal guaranteed funds, exchange traded funds and listed open‐ended funds. The regulations of collective investment schemes are outlined.
