ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is the most severe of the psychotic illnesses so even the best methods can be expected to succeed only in a modest proportion of cases. A critical review of studies of the efficacy of psychotherapy of schizophrenia concludes that most show very limited success. The author’s personal experience indicates a modest success rate. The validity of clinical case studies based on dynamic systems in interaction, and statistical studies based on linear reasoning, is examined and contrasted.
