Freud’s attempt to treat psychosis as though it were neurosis

Although Freud did not believe that any of his patients were psychotic, and treated all of them as examples of his neurosis model, a review of several of his cases suggests that he was mistaken. The case of Ernst Lanzer, aka the “Rat Man,” is reviewed to illustrate Freud’s effort to impose his neurosis theory on a psychotic individual.
