ABSTRACT

The Conclusion examines the changing landscape of philology around the turn of the twentieth century. I discuss the emergence of new disciplines from the nineteenth-century study of language, and I survey different accounts of the field’s decline and transformation. I show how the Victorians helped transmit the nexus of philology, politics, and versification to a new generation of Modernist poets. The chapter also demonstrates how the OED continues to inspire contemporary poets in the digital era. I close by considering recent calls for a new or revived philology in the humanities.
