ABSTRACT

The Sensory Images are what we see, what we hear, what we smell, what we taste and what we touch. The Sensory Images are the keys to the inner world of the character, the place where the actor wants to be in pursuit of the Objective. Kinesthetic Behavior are the physical gestures and tasks that happen in the world of Sensory Images. This is where “acting” becomes “being.” The author directed a play in Washington DC many years ago called Hambone by Javon Johnson. The sensory experience of taste, the taste of an old-fashioned Mom-and-Pop-style diner, was so effective. It helped to bolster the audience’s attachment to the characters and the diner whose future was in jeopardy. Working with very creative designers, we were creating a sensory experience for the characters that would in turn bring a tactile reality to the play.
