ABSTRACT

The authors created Five Ws, revealing the What, Who, When, Where, and Why. They then plotted the Three Questions to Choice for each character independently and learned how the Five Tools bring the ensemble together. They determined the Primary Verbs with the help of Two Sentences that focus the action. Tension is produced by the twists and turns from colliding Objectives producing Obstacles and the Choices each character ultimately will make. This roadmap, this director’s blueprint, is called the Marked Script. Clarity is very important to the director in rehearsal and in production. A messy, disorganized script usually makes for a messy, disorganized rehearsal and, heaven forbid, a messy, disorganized shoot.
