ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book proposes that such a dimension encourages teachers and school leaders to think again about what ‘education’ means. It argues that when the teacher allows the lesson to enable learners to embrace reflection within the learning environment or setting, using the set ‘learning objective’ as a platform for personal development and an end result, the lesson becomes more than a box to tick, but an opportunity for transformation. The book suggests that teachers might consider the learning that happens ‘beyond the objective,’ that is, to see the potential in education for personal development. Teaching to objectives should enable teachers and learners to stay focused in lessons and recognise what has been achieved. The book offers recommendations to Governments and policy makers, calling for a change in perspective and a ‘ten-degree shift’ in practice.
