ABSTRACT

This chapter considers fundamental methodological assumptions related to the exploration of the phenomenon of proculturation. Proculturation is a developmental process that occurs/ensues when a person engages in interaction with foreign cultural elements, and it should be studied microgenetically in order to be able to grasp developmental trajectories throughout the ontological development. It is a phenomenological experience, and thus, it should be considered as a self-centred phenomenon. If proculturation occurs, it becomes part of an epigenetic process of human development. However, it should not be considered as a stage of development, as it is theoretically possible for a person to never engage in proculturation and live happily ever after. Proculturation of each agent should be regarded as a special case, and therefore, methodological approaches should be conceived accordingly.
