ABSTRACT

The core symptoms of ADHD are presented, referring to the main international diagnostic manuals (DSM and ICD). The symptoms are then explained in depth, and their consequences (e.g. difficult relations with peers, problems at school) are described and discussed in detail. Although ADHD is presented as a categorical condition in both the DSM and the ICD taxonomy, it is actually a dimensional disorder. Signs and symptoms of ADHD can affect the general population, and only become a disorder (i.e. they cause impairments) when they are particularly severe. ADHD is often associated with various comorbidities, and the possible types of comorbidity (especially learning disabilities) are also discussed.
