ABSTRACT
Setting up a system of global environmental monitoring was presented and considered as one of the most important tasks facing the international community in its effort to attain the objectives and specific goals agreed to at the Stockholm Conference. The Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS) was supposed to do the earthwatching and to provide the monitoring data needed for assessment of the state of the environment and for its environmentally sound uses and management.
