ABSTRACT
The precipitation of acid rain and the acidification of lakes in Scandinavia were among the reasons that inspired Sweden’s proposal to convene a UN Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE). Soon after, acid rain became one of the prominent concerns on the environmental agenda, giving rise to polemics and conflicts within and among developed countries, and to intense scientific controversy.
