ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the argument is made that the former and existing paradigms of cultural education (multiculturalism and interculturalism) are increasingly irrelevant to the social, economic and political contexts of global society in the 21st Century. It argues that a new approach to cultural education, that of transculturalism, which builds on the foundations of the existing paradigms, should be adopted in educational programs. In particular, the chapter discusses the reasons why a transcultural perspective must now be considered to be an important aspect of teacher expertise in the 21st century.
