ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter are contemporary sources that allow a glimpse of the level of awareness of Jews and non-Jews of the anti-Jewish measures in Thessaloniki and their consequences. These include eyewitness accounts, newspapers both from the collaborationist press and resistance groups as well as proclamations, all of which were circulating in the city and around the country. A number of these texts reveal a very good understanding of developments and of their potential consequences. The Christians of the city were well aware of the hardships suffered by the Jews as well as the inhuman conditions in the deportation trains. Some of these sources were even published in Athens, which shows that these events were known outside of the borders of Thessaloniki. The contemporary awareness of the events against the Jews of Thessaloniki can serve as the basis in order to evaluate the reactions of the Greek Christian population, as detailed in the next chapters.
