ABSTRACT

The mental appears to come into existence without any other cause or origin than the non-mental; Not-Mind not only affects but apparently produces Mind by itself. Non-mental processes are not limited to the inorganic world. There are activities of all living organisms, including the highest, which are precisely analogous to the behaviour of inorganic matter, and can be explained by the same physical laws. The mental is dependent on non-mental conditions for its coming into being; but, having come into being, it operates according to its own nature. Mind is, in its view, a rarity in the universe, existing somewhat precariously on a non-mental foundation. Life on the earth shows some evidence of having sprung from a common source. But its history does not reveal to us the constant inexorable fulfilment of a single unchanging plan.
