ABSTRACT

Philosophers of many different persuasions have insisted so strongly on the utter and insuperable distinctness of Matter and Mind, that it seems paradoxical to suggest that the same thing might be both mental and material. Radical Dualism is a philosophical theory which derives a great deal of its plausibility from confusion. If Matter is simply a system of diversified activities giving rise to various experiences, if physics gives only a formulation of some of its structural properties or habits, the way is open for a further filling-in of the picture of nature. The difficulty with Idealism is rather to see a clear and concrete meaning in its assertion that Reality is fundamentally spiritual. If there is one supreme and ultimate Cause of all experiences, this Cause is known by its works, or effects, by the way it behaves. The difficulty with Idealism is rather to see a clear and concrete meaning in its assertion that Reality is fundamentally spiritual.
