ABSTRACT

Several seemingly disparate topics are covered in this chapter under the common theme of arenas of racial integration, while including discussion of ongoing racism within each institution. The chapter begins with an overall evaluation of the extent of racial integration in American society, through the use of Milton Gordon’s stages of assimilation. Then interracial intimacies are explored, which include interracial relationships, multiracial families, and biracial/multiracial identities, with emphasis on the unique struggles multiracial families face and the informal social control efforts extended to limit interracial relationships. The chapter then explores racial integration and ongoing racism in the sports world and the US military.
