ABSTRACT

The arrival of food parcels and their distribution in Theresienstadt are central in this chapter, which also explores the importance of the extra food. The Danes became able to barter and thereby obtain needed items or, even better, sleeping quarters. Because of the parcels the position of the Danish group in the ghetto hierarchy changed: from the poorest they became among the “wealthiest.” The role of food in the ghetto economy is examined as is to what extent the Danes shared their “wealth,” like a food collection in January 1945, which caused an argument within the group.
