ABSTRACT

The visit of the international delegation, headed by a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and including two Danish representatives, took place on June 23, 1944, after an intense beautification of the ghetto, which included transports to Auschwitz-Birkenau of 7,500 people in May 1944. On the eve of the visit, a number of Danes were granted better housing and, under a roll call, instructed on how to behave during the visit, and threatened with transport should they disclose anything about the real conditions. The chapter explores the visit and how it was experienced by the Danish ghetto inmates as well as what outcome they expected, like a return of Swedish nationals among the deportees from Denmark.
