ABSTRACT

The events surrounding the Judenaktion, the preparations, the warning leaked from the German headquarters, and the protests from all levels of Danish society are detailed in Chapter 2. Arrests during and after the raid are explored, as are the conditions in Camp Horserød, used as transit camp for Jews in relation with the Judenaktion. The chapter includes an analysis and a new interpretation of the November 1943 meeting between Werner Best, the Reich plenipotentiary, and Adolf Eichmann of the Reich Security Main Office. The chapter ends with a discussion about why Danish Jews were sent off to Theresienstadt, suggesting that this might (or might not) have been part of the propaganda effort, and perhaps even part of Himmler’s attempts to trade in Jewish lives.
