ABSTRACT

Housing and work were fundamental in the ghetto everyday and are topics at the centre of this chapter. Work life was the basis of the daily experience for adults as well as many children. School was forbidden, yet school groups were established; thus, Danish children were “taught” outside during the first months of their presence in Theresienstadt. The so-called census on November 11, 1943, a crucial event for the ghetto inmates, is described in detail.
