ABSTRACT

In this chapter, intergroup relationships within the Danish group, and how the Danes were viewed by other nationalities and their interactions with them, are explored. The role of Chief Rabbi Max Friediger vis-à-vis the Danes as well as his position in the Council of Elders are examined. A part of the chapter is dedicated to the unusual release and return in January 1944 of the five so-called mistakenly deported. The prisoner’s relations with the Czech gendarmes as well as those with the SS soldiers are also analysed. Workers in commandos under the surveillance of the SS were more likely to be subjected to violence than workers in other commandos, something experienced by young people working in agriculture.
