ABSTRACT

This chapter focusses on various aspects of despair, disease, and death. The conditions of the weakest – the children, the elderly, and the ill – are central. Weight loss caused by the poor ghetto diet began soon after arrival, and dying was in many cases connected with the lack of food or medication. Treatment of diseases as well as disease prevention in the ghetto is explored. Suicides also took place within the group of Danes, and this chapter researches dying, the burials, and the information sent to Copenhagen about the deaths of Danish prisoners.
