ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an overview of compulsory schooling laws, statutory attendance requirements, and the due process right of parents to choose private alternatives to public schools. Exemptions from compulsory schooling laws and eligibility criteria for enrollment in public and private schools are next examined, including residency and vaccination requirements. State and federal legislative frameworks governing private schools and home-based education programs are introduced. We then discuss voucher programs and other types of financial assistance for private, parochial, and online charter schools.
