ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an overview of the treatment of students with disabilities, before and after the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Federal requirements, including measures designed to prevent purposeful discrimination and harassment and to offer accessibility and reasonable accommodations, are explored in detail. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires a “free appropriate public education” (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) for all eligible students, who must be provided with an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) and related services, including transition services and positive behavioral support. The chapter concludes with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and its requirements for students with disabilities.
