ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book illustrates how urban design under neoliberalism is represented in Santiago. It explains the relationship between urban design and neoliberalism based on the information gathered from fieldwork in Santiago. The book presents a literature review to problematise the relationship between the disciplinary field of urban design and neoliberalism and how this relationship can be studied in the case of Santiago de Chile. It describes the political and ideological dimensions of neoliberalism with a focus on Chile and the relationship between these two dimensions regarding city-production processes. The book provides a global analysis that aims to present a baseline for contextualising and understanding the historical origins of Santiago’s urban design discipline to more accurately perceive its neoliberalisation. It explores the spatial outcomes of the institutional transformations that generated the practice of urban design under neoliberalism.
