ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 rigorously reviews longitudinal and nonlongitudinal studies (cross-sectional, cross-national, and cross-regional) to identify the important determinants of disaster deaths or disaster mortality risk factors. The determinants of disaster mortality are broadly classified as hazard or vulnerability factors. Results of this chapter reveal that hazards and vulnerability factors are essential determinants for deaths resulting from natural disasters. Each factor plays a unique role in various disasters. The information presented in this chapter is essential for crafting and implementing effective disaster management policies and appropriate interventions that will reduce fatalities and help decision makers wisely allocate resources for various disasters.
